In short - we want a home. A place to inspire the world. A Buddhist Centre for London.
Every year we visit our friends' centres in cities all over the world - from Vladivostok to Budapest, from Hamburg to Canberra - where they have rebuilt old factories, transformed derelict buildings and rejuvenated communities. They have found a way to combine the wisdom of Tibet and ancient India with the critical western view - and their aim is similarly global: to develop people.
We want the same for London.
The reality - now:
Current meditation room - only 30m2 for regular meetings with 60 people it is a very tight squeeze.Centre space of only 80m2 - for 5 people to live, and social space for 100 people. 1 shower, 2 toilets.
Meditation room is in the garage of an old mews house - the most peaceful garage in London! But no windows ... it gets very cold in winter and hot in summer.
The current centre is Holborn is rented. Whilst we think our current landlord is great - we would like our own place so we can transform it into somewhere that really inspires. We represent a 2500 year old family - an unbroken transmission of wisdom from the Buddha and we want an iconic place that demonstrates that.
